ES VISUAL ARTS
In the Elementary School (ES) Visual Art program, the Pre K to Grade 5 students concentrate on learning about 4 foundational key areas of the discipline which are blended with the key concepts of the PYP Program. The elements of art and design, the use of media and tools, art aesthetics and art as it is used in both a social and a historical context, are the core components from which all student exploration evolves.
We believe that self-expression should be celebrated as well as supported by an in depth undertanding of the techniques and processes used, within all stages of producing a visual product.
Pre- K through Second Grade

The students create mixed media self-portraits

Using mirrors and their observational skills the students draw and paint pictures of themselves

The students explore Art around the world and create Australian dot paintings

The students also explore the book about the History of Steel Pan and create illustrations

The students experiment with analagous colours in the colour cycle to create animal paintings

Using their knowledge of the warm and cool colours the students paint Moko Jumbies

Looking at the way in which light works in art the students create stained glass pictures

Inspired by a variety of traditional carnival characters the students paint their own

Students work in teams to make Carnival characters of their choice

This team works together on their mixed media Moko Jumbie design
Third through Fifth Grade

Third Grade Artists played with word art styles, from Medieval Illuminated Letters to action packed Pop Art.

Third Graders created Art Media still life drawings working to develop value and proportion skills.

Fourth grade Artists create a different paper mosaic each year, working with space, shape and the design process.

This year students looked at innovation in Art Technology over time through the lens of one of art's most traditional techniques - weaving.

Fifth Grade Artists started out the school year reviewing the Elements and Principles of design and created sculptures exploding with color and pattern.

Fifth Grade Artists looked and First Nations design styles and stories, and then created their own prints and stories.

Students unlock missions over the course of the year, and as a whole class or small group they use inquiry and problem solving to figure out the clues. Art History has a chance to really come to life!

Problem solving comes to life as students work as a team.
